Rennes is divided into 11 cantons of which the historic centre is also an important tourist area, as it gathers a variety of attractions.
Interest areas
- Historic Centre
Features: There are many traditional timber frame houses, but the main highlights of the area are the Parliament of Brittany, basilica Saint-Sauveur, Place des Lices, the former St. Yves chapel, Place Saint-Anne, park Thabor and a number of other squares.
- South of the Villaine
Highlights: The Fine Arts Museum is situated on Quai Émile Zola, by the Vilaine River. Les Champs Libres is a building on Esplanade Charles de Gaulle that houses the Brittany Museum, the regional library on six levels and a science centre with a planetarium. Other points of interest are the large mills at Rue Duhamel, constructed on each side of the south branch of the Vilaine in 1895 and 1902.
- Place des Lices
Highlights: Les Halles Martenot, the Mordelaises Gate, the Jehan Duchesne tower from the 15th century, Gallo-Roman fortifications.
- Place Saint-Anne
Highlights: Saint-Aubin church, a Jacobite convent and a former 14th century hospital.
